Octave Identification
The range of all possible pitches is extremely wide. This makes it difficult to specifically talk about a pitch. That is why there is a system known as the Octave Identification System. In this system you call each pitch by its name plus a number. The first C on the keyboard is 1. The lowest pitch in the keyboard is A and since it is below C1, it is labeled A0. The B that is below C1 is also labeled B0. Every pitch after C1 is labeled with a 1 up until the next C which is labeled C2. This works the same for each octave. Middle C is labeled C4.
The 8va written above the last two notes mean the pitches sound an octave higher than written. This is often used when writing the actual pitch would mean a large amount of ledger lines. 8vb is also used and means that the pitch sounds an octave below the written note.
